Mountain trip 5/21/17

Sunday May 21st

My buddy got a new truck in a Hail sale from the storm here the other week and wanted to drive up to the mountains from Denver so we took it up to Bailey and Fair Play and found a brewery at each spot along the way. The best thing to remember about driving anywhere more than 15 minutes with me is to have good music and not to talk too much, you ruin the drive.

The First stop was Mad Jack’s Mountain Brewery in Bailey Colorado. A family owned spot that does not disappoint. Small tap room with a large outdoor area. Plenty of games around on the inside, a bear rug hidden on the ceiling pipe and good beer. Made friends with one of the brewers, always a good thing. Definitely a new favorite spot. out of all the beers they had I did not have one that I did not like.  Great ride up as well, this one is located on the other side of the gas station in Bailey.

Out of the 5 original beers they had on tap I tried all 5. They also keep mead and wine and a beer from Prost on tap, but i didn’t touch any of that.

  • You don’t know Squatch!- Dark color, brown taste. not bad for 8.5%. was one of my favorite beers i had this day.
  • Pale ale- A lighter beer. Sweet taste. Pale at the end.
  • Black Bear Ale- nice and dark. Full flavor, semi sweet.
  • Allison’s Brown– A great light tasting brown. didn’t have the nutty taste that some browns have.
  • Honey Wheat- A great wheat, light beer with slight honey after taste.

If you head through Bailey definitely stop for a pint and fill a growler.

We continued on to Fairplay, over the pass and through Jefferson. Located next to the Grocery store we stopped at South Park Brewing. nice view from the front with a few tables outside. Inside it was a big space pretty open but plain.

Out of the 13 they had on tap i tried 8, my buddy was in a hurry to get home and it was getting late and he had to drive.

  • Mosaic Pale ale- A good Pale with a slight fruit taste to it
  • Summer Saison– a non sour saison, light beer. not bad.
  • Cherry Blonde-An amazing Beer. I liked it a lot. Light cherry tasting, red color.
  • Chocolate Cherry Stout-They used different cherries it was great. My Buddy loved this beer.
  • Milk Stout- Not a bad milk stout, creamy with chocolate taste.
  • This is Bruges Triple- A great triple, 11.5% with a fruity taste
  • IPA on the Mountain- a great IPA actually. Not too hoppy, not skunky. just even.
  • Ranch Hand Ale– A sweet creamy ale.

The other beers they had looked good a few IPAs. Next time through definitely want to try more.

They have a food menu that I heard was actually pretty good. We had chips and salsa but everything else smelt good.
