Sunday April 30th I went down to Grist Brewing off of Santa Fe drive (85) and Town Center. It is just north of C470 and Santa Fe. Its a nice spot. Completely open inside with an odd shape bar in the middle. A few things I noticed when first getting inside were the light bulbs around the bar, Kind of old looking, I’d put them in a steampunk sort of look, and Mugs. A bunch of glass mugs hang over the bar. Which right there should tell you 2 things. First people like to come there enough to spend money on joining a Mug club, and second the beer must be good enough for people to want their own mug while they are there. They have a small patio and 2 garage doors that open up, one of which goes half way and meets a bar top with chairs on either side. The doors weren’t open being that it snowed the day before, the last weekend in April and we get snow and it was still chilly out. Good view though, like every decent place in Denver you can see the mountains from the windows. They offer a 10% off AHA deal and they are dog friendly.
The food truck “OL’ SKOOL QUE” Had some of the most tender pulled pork I have ever had and a home made Chipotle BBQ sauce that was not spicy but had just enough flavor.
They have Trivia on Wednesday nights with Geeks Who Drink, which in my opinion has the best trivia.
I tried 9 out of 12 beers they had going on this visit.(I know I should of tried all 12 but I had laundry to do at home, 2 weeks worth 🙁 infact)
- Skiing In Jeans Bock. Which is a sweet caramel tasting beer. I rather enjoyed it.
- Stay At Home Blonde. That name alone makes it perfect for The Ranch. Its a light beer with a sweet finish.
- Transition State Kolsch. Another light beer but this one with a crisp finish.
- Window Tour Hefeweizen. Not a bad Hefe, Light on the banana leaf with a little more clove to it. My buddy Johnson would enjoy it. Hes all about the Hefes.
- Third Ring Belgian Strong Ale. A dark beer that is like 10% but has awesome taste, kind of sweet so not overpowering. I enjoyed it for sure!
- Niobrara Milk Stout. They had this one on Cask. Not bad stout, some chocolate in there with a cream ale finish.
- Staple English Indian Pale Ale. I personally did not like this one too much but I remember it the most. For an IPA it was not that hoppy. The flavor was not for me. Skunky on my pallet but I know a guy at work that would love this one. I failed to finish the taster of it. Soo much so that the elderly couple sitting next to me asked which one it was and why I did not like it. But when you watch a guy reading, sitting alone drink 8 other tasters in a row and not finish this one its a fair question.
Fun fact I learned recently on this “walking” beer tour I did with 3 friends in Denver from this dude David that runs it. Indian Pale Ales were originally made from the British sending beer to India and it would go bad on the way there so they added a bunch of hops to the barrels so it could last the journey, hence the name Indian Pale Ale. Cause you know the sun never set on the British Empire, cause God didn’t trust the Brits in the dark!
- Ground Rule Tripel. This was the last one I tried but one of my favorites. Sweet, crisp and the Tripel taste mixed in. Definitely going back to get a full pour or 3 of this one.
- Tartanium Berliner Weisse. Pretty sour and tart. I have had it before and even bought it in the liquor store. At the tap room you can add fruit syrups to it, don’t. Enjoy it for what it is, awesome!
They had 3 other beers on tap, all IPA’s but after the English Staple I decided against them, and the laundry. But if you go and like IPAs let me know what you think.
They are getting a 2nd location near Park Meadows. and I am excited to check that one out, they are calling it “Grist Laboratory”, that alone makes me intrigued. Said to going to be their small batch and experimental home. Which are two of my favorite beer types.
